1521 is the year Puerto Rico was given its modern name. Previously, the enchanted island was known as Borinquen. We’re very proud of our heritage and wanted to recognize that in our small business company.
Strategically fixed in remote areas along the coastline of Puerto Rico, lighthouses were constructed to enable maritime trade, and provided safety and comfort to the owners that resided in the lighthouses.
We’re so intrigued by the story behind Puerto Rico’s lighthouses, and the island’s rediscovery in 1521, that we trademarked its brand.
1521 is a small business company. We are Latina- and Women-owned and Veteran-owned.
We cannot compete with large retail companies found in shopping malls. Those companies mass-produce candles - making them attractive from a price point - but they may not necessarily put the care and safe ingredients into their products. They may be affordable and nice-looking, but beware of the toxins they contain.

Our diligent tests consistently show that our 15-ounce candles can burn for up to 108 hours. Our 6-ounce candles can burn up to 50-60 hours.
We work hard to make sure your order is immediately processed and sent to your home quickly, efficiently and economically. Although we hand-pour every single one of our candles based on small-batches, we make no excuses in shipping your candles within four (4) days from the time you place an order.

We take pride in offering a variety of enticing scents to suit every mood, ensuring that you can find the perfect aroma to create your own personal sanctuary. We work diligently to formulate combinations of new scents and offer them as final products after thorough testing every 12 weeks on average.
Tunneling happens with scented wax candles. Here’s how to fix it:
Cut a piece of aluminum paper big enough to wrap the jar, extending the height of the jar by about 3 inches. Then softly wrap the top of the paper to make it look like a volcano. Let it sit for about 30 minutes. Use caution.
Sweating can be visible for candles composed of natural waxes such as coconut-soy blends. This is not a defect. It is caused by the sensitivity of the wax itself, due to room temperature, exposure to sunlight or other causes. Don’t worry: You can gently clean the sweat off with a rag but you don’t have to.
You must follow these steps:
1. Place your candle on a stable, flat, heat resistant surface and away from flammable items.
2. Trim candle wick to 1/4” before each use to keep the wax clean.
3. Avoid burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
4. Always allow enough time for the candle wax to melt from the edges to avoid tunneling.
5. Never leave a burning candle unattended, always extinguish fully, and never extinguish with water.
6. Always keep well out of reach of children and pets.
The above steps will help you:
- Keep your candle flames under control
- Reduce soot from developing in your vessel
- Minimize wick mushroom effects
- Keep your vessel from getting too hot, and
- Increase the longevity of your new candles
